Brown Bread[1]

2 cups corn meal

1 cup rye flour
1 cup white flour
¼ teaspoon sal

1 teaspoon soda

2 cups sweet milk
1 cup sour milk

1 cup molasses

Combine the dry ingredients. Combine the sweet and sour milk and add the molasses. Add to the dry ingredients and mix smooth. Place in greased baking powder cans and steam four hours.

  1. Recipe for Brown Bread endorsed by Better Homes & Gardens upon submission by Cora L. Pike of Hiram, Maine. Reverse indicates that the recipe was Cora's grandmother's recipe, most likely meaning Lusannah Wadsworth (1797 - 1879).
