Template:Process header Templates are shortcuts placed within sets of double curly brackets to perform various functions throughout Wikisource. As you proofread and edit texts in Wikisource, you can use templates to aid in formatting, navigation, and and a variety of other tasks.

Common Templates

Below are a selection of templates that are used throughout Wikisource.

Formatting Templates

Formatting templates are used to change the way that text displays when being read.

Size templates

Help:Font size templates

General formatting

Template You type You get Notes
{{center}} or {{c}} {{center|Centred}}

Centred

{{right}} {{right|Right aligned}} Template:Right
{{underline}}, {{u}} {{underline|Underlined text}} Template:Underline
{{greyed}}, {{red}} {{greyed|grey text}}, {{red|red text}} Template:Greyed, Template:Red
{{Small-caps}} or {{sc}} {{Small-caps|Make this sentence use small caps}}. Template:Small-caps.
{{RunningHeader}} or {{rh}} {{RunningHeader|Left text|Center text|Right text}} Template:RunningHeader This often used in the Page namespace, in the header field.
{{gap}} text with aTemplate:Tlxgap! text with aTemplate:Gapgap!
{{hanging indent inherit}}, {{hii}} {{hii}}Text{{div end}} Template:HiiThis text is indented with a hanging indent of 2em, but you can pass other parameters. The first parameter is how far the whole block is indented, the second is how far the first line overhangs. For example {{hii|2|0}} gives a simple indented block.Template:Div end

Column formatting

<section begin="column formatting"/>

  • {{multicol}}, {{multicol-break}}, {{multicol-section}}, {{multicol-end}}, this template uses a table to create multiple columns of text. You need to place the breaks explicitly, but they will never move.
  • {{div col}}, {{div col end}}, which uses CSS3 properies to create columns dynamically. The reader's browser will choose where best to put the breaks, so the layout cannot be guaranteed not to change. This one is good for lists, as you don't need to worry about placing {{multicol-break}}s.

Navigation Templates

<section begin="navigation templates"/> Navigation templates are used to help a reader navigate through or between texts.

Template You type You get Notes
{{TOC}} {{TOC}} Template:TOC Used to provide a compact TOC to an alphabetical listing.
{{AuxTOC}} {{AuxTOC|

* [[/Chapter 1/]]}}

Template:AuxTOC Used when the work does not include an original Table of Contents.
{{TOC begin}},
{{TOC end}} and
all {{TOC row....}}'s

{{TOC begin}}
{{TOC row 1-1-1|...}}
{{TOC end}}

Template:TOC begin

Template:TOC row 2-1 Template:TOC row 1-1-1 Template:TOC row 1-1-1 Template:TOC end

Used to easily format existing TOCs in the original.

Typography Templates

Typography templates are used to reproduce a work's original or unusual typography.

Template You type You get
{{Hyphenated word start}} or {{hws}} This page ends with the split word "{{Hyphenated word start|abso|absolutely}} This page ends with the split word "Template:Hyphenated word start
{{Hyphenated word end}} or {{hwe}} {{Hyphenated word end|lutely|absolutely}}," split between two pages. Template:Hyphenated word end," split between two pages.

{{ae}} All hail Athenæ! All hail Athenæ!

Article-Specific templates

Some templates are designed for specific articles in Wikisource. They can be found in Category:Specific article templates.

Housekeeping templates

Some templates are not designed for "inline" use in a work, but are used to keep track of incomplete works or flag missing information.

Tracking progress

<section begin="progress templates"/>* {{incomplete}} marks a work as incomplete. It generally means that some parts of the work are not available on Wikisource in any form, either as text content or page scans. If possible, use a more specific template like those below.

  • {{OCR-errors}} when the work contains OCR errors and/or page breaks and does not have a page scan.
  • {{Transcluded OCR errors}} when the work contains OCR errors from a transcluded page scan.
  • {{Split}} when the work needs to be split up into sections or chapters.
  • {{Split-multiple}} when a page such as a collection of snippets needs to be split into various different works.
  • {{Numbers}} when the work contains page breaks from the original work, but not other OCR errors.
  • {{Refs}} when the work has references in the text which should be converted to the Wiki ref format
  • {{Standardise}} when the work is complete, but doesn't conform with the style guidelines
  • {{Clean up djvu}} when the work has OCR errors, or hasn't been proofread, and does have a page scan
  • {{Migrate to djvu}} when the work is ostensibly complete, but needs to be migrated to an existing page scan
  • {{Translation}} for rating the progress of a Wikisource translation.<section end="progress templates"/>

Missing data

<section begin="missing-data"/>

  • {{Initials}} when an Author page name contains unknown initials
  • {{Image}} when an image in a work is missing
  • {{No header}} a page is missing the {{header}} template. All main namespace pages and subpages need this template.
  • {{No license}} a work is missing a licence. One should be found and added, otherwise the work may be listed for deletion.
  • {{No source}} a work is missing the source document. All works should have a link to the original work, which may be in the form of a local page scan or an external Internet address.
  • {{New license required}} when there is no valid licence template for the work, but it is believed to be free.<section end="missing-data"/>

Questionable works

<section begin="questionable works"/>

  • {{Copyvio}} when a work is a suspected copyright violation. If used, the offending page must be listed at WS:CV.
  • {{Fidelity}} when the work's source document is of questionable quality or origin
  • {{Authenticity}} when the work may be a fake or a hoax.<section end="questionable works"/>

Licensing

OTRS

<section begin="otrs"/>

  • Commons:OTRS where you can find general information on email writing and sending, as well as general information about the OTRS system.
  • {{OTRS received}}, for use when a ticket is received, but not confirmed due to a problem. Further correspondence may be required. Changed to {{OTRS pending}} or {{PermissionOTRS}} upon resolution of the problem.
  • {{OTRS pending}}, for use when the ticket is in order, but still in the queue. Changed to {{PermissionOTRS}} when confirmed.
  • {{PermissionOTRS}}, when the ticket is received and confirmed.
