I used to shoot a fair amount (for a hobbyist) of black & white and color reversal (slide) (depending entirely, of course, on one's definitions of "hobbyist" and "fair amount"), but when I left the Army in 1993, I lost my access to a dark room and gave up for a while. Of course, I still shot color negative and later digital, but really just travel and family photos. I'm just getting back to it and hoping to shortly start shooting medium format color reversal and B&W. I picked up an old Argus Argoflex E and rebuilt it; and I purchased a Yashicamat-12 that I hope to do the same to soon. I'm also hoping to get a decent old 35mm rangefinder (RF) camera, such as a Yashica Electro 35GSN, or maybe just dig out my old Chinon 35EE with which I shot all my Fujichrome in Korea in 1989-1990 and most of my color negative before that.

I'm also interested in the digital dark room and recently purchased an Epson V600 and hope to archive all my old images, some I may send off to save time but some I will scan myself for the experience and control.

I'm also interested in digital archiving and do-it-yourself book scanners.

35mm (Kodak 135 format)

  • Chinon 35EE (Range Finder)[1][2][3][4] - Mine was really beat around. I got it in high school and carried it on several trips and through my first year in the Army, I fell on some ice in a Korean cemetery and the camera back came open and was bent. Amazingly, I managed to save all but a couple frames, straighten the back by hand and from then on held it closed with a piece of hundred mile an hour tape.
  • Yashica FX-3 Super (SLR) - I bought this for business (evidentiary photos) about 10 years ago. I have bad luck falling with cameras as I fell and hit this one on a curb, shearing off a lens mounting blade. I bought a used replacement lens and it seemed to work fine, though I haven't used it in several years now. Still have the original lens but the blade was cast into the lens body and I think it's toast.

Digital

  • Fujifilm FinePix S50000 - bought this in the early 2000s and took it Iraq with me. Got some good photos, including the one to the right

  • iPhone 3GS32 - this worked well for me and I took some decent photos with it. My wife now has this phone.
  • iPhone 4GS16 - as it's locked for Telekom, this is no use to me as a phone and is available to anyone who wants it. As it is, it's nothing but an overpriced iPod.
  • iPhone 4GS8 - My current phone, somehow I keep going down in GB.
